KING CENTER FORMS MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR ALLIANCES

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Center For Nonviolent Social Change, Inc. today announced the creation of two national networks to coordinate the nationwide observances of the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday and establish a network of organizations that promote Dr. King’s message year-round.

The King Center’s National Holiday Advisory Committee will work with groups in all fifty states to make the King Holiday a more effective vehicle for promoting Dr. King’s teachings and encouraging community service.

The Center’s King Related Organizations and Entities network will create alliances with organizations that promote Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s philosophies throughout the year with programs or events, effectively disseminating one concise message to a world-wide audience.

States sending representatives to a convening meeting held August 18-19, 2000 at The King Center in Atlanta, included Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Indiana, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Utah, and Virginia.

“By forming these alliances with the public we hope to ensure that the teachings and legacy of my husband are further preserved and made readily available to the masses of people searching for them”, said Mrs. Coretta Scott King, Founder of The King Center and wife of Dr. King, in convening the meeting.

The King Center will provide leadership and guidance to the networks initially as they prepare for the 15th Anniversary of the federal Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday. Future emphasis is being placed on the dissemination of Dr. King’s message to a worldwide audience made possible by using the latest developments in technology.

Organizations wishing to become involved in the organization should contact the King Center at (404) 526-8900.
