King Center "Cuts Ribbon" for New Gift Store/Resource Centers

The King Center hosted a ribbon cutting reception and ceremony to open two redesigned gift stores and resource centers which was made possible through the generosity of the Target Corporation.

The redesign includes expanded merchandise space, a wall of quotes by Dr. King, visual and audio displays that inform, educate, and enhance the visitors’ experience.

“The King Center was recently recognized as the #1 cultural tourist attraction in the southeast with annual visitors of more than 650,000,” indicates Ms. Tricia Harris, Managing Director of The King Center.  “So it is both fitting and necessary that the experience for visitors include the best possible space for further information and education.  We thank Target for assisting us in accomplishing this initiative.”

Martin Luther King, Jr. High School.

Events included The King Center and Target hosting 45 honor students from the 10th grade at Martin Luther King, Jr. High School in Dekalb County for educational tours of the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site. The tours were led by National Park Service Rangers and facilitated by King Center staff.  The students' day concluded with a brief program in which Mrs. Coretta Scott King and her youngest daughter, Rev. Bernice A. King, presented the school with a collection of educational materials for the high school’s library and a framed portrait of Dr. King for the new school’s lobby.

In making the presentations, Mrs. King shared the following:

“Like Martin Luther King, Jr., The King Center believes that choosing nonviolence is the only hope for humanity’s survival and progress.  Thus, The King Center is dedicated to promoting Martin Luther King, Jr.’s philosophy and strategy of nonviolence as a way of life, as well as a method for peaceful social change.”

“We have a special concern that young people be exposed to Dr. King’s empowering values and teachings through the latest communications technology, as well as books and other reading materials.”
