Founder's Message
The
King Center is making significant progress in our long-range mission
to spread the teachings of Martin Luther King, Jr. to a broader,
global constituency. In addition, we have made dramatic improvement
in the Center’s capacity to coordinate the efforts of my husband’s
followers in the U.S. and around the world to help fulfill his
Dream.
Despite the great
victories of the Civil Rights Movement under Martin Luther King,
Jr., many obstacles remain before his dream can be fulfilled,
including high rates of child poverty, AIDS, the death penalty,
domestic, community and international violence, declining
educational opportunities and many forms of racism, bigotry and
discrimination, to name just a few. Clearly, the philosophy and
methods of Kingian Nonviolence remain our best hope for addressing
these crises, and The King Center's role in promoting my husband's
teachings can have a profound impact on the kind of future we create
for our young people and future generations.
As the King
Center's programs have been refined over the years to accommodate
changing times, our dedication to building the Beloved Community of his
great Dream remains undiminished. Indeed, under the leadership of
our Chairman Dexter Scott King, The King Center has met this challenge with an energetic
dedication to reach young people and to help prepare them for
leadership in the struggle against poverty, racism, war and violence
in the spirit and tradition of Martin Luther King, Jr.
It was imperative that The King Center develop the capability to sustain programs which address the distressed conditions of humanity in this globalized world. I am proud of Dexter for having the vision and tenacity to use his administration to organize our strength in a way that prepares us to meet the challenges presented by 21 st Century living.
This is an exciting time for the evolution of my husband's legacy and I can think of no one better equipped or more prepared for the tasks ahead than my son Dexter Scott King, who has assumed leadership of The King Center as Chairman.
Indeed this an exciting time for The King Center,
as we move forward we bring an enhanced capacity to inspire and involve
the people all over the world in carrying forward Martin Luther King,
Jr.'s unfinished work. Although it is a daunting challenge, it is one we
accept with an abiding gratitude to all of our supporters and with a
determined commitment to fulfill his dream in the 21st century.
