STATEMENT FROM DEXTER SCOTT KING
Mr. Dexter Scott King, Chairman, President and Chief Executive
Officer of the Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change,
Inc. today issued the following statement concerning the vote by the
National Capital Planning Commission to approve building a memorial
honoring his father, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., on the Mall in
Washington, D.C. The King Center has been involved in this effort through
membership on the Alpha Phi Alpha National Memorial Project Team, which
was instrumental in this historic achievement.
It is gratifying that the commission has reached an acceptable compromise.
It is fitting and appropriate that this memorial will be situated near
the monuments to Washington, Lincoln, Jefferson, and Roosevelt, four of
Americas most visionary leaders. My fathers, and the Civil
Rights Movements contributions to democracy are very much in keeping
with the spirit of these Presidents legacies.
As members of the National Memorial Project Team we have seen firsthand
the uphill battle in which the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity has been involved
to make the approval of the Tidal Basin site a reality. My family and
I applaud the Alphas and congratulate them on this accomplishment.
