2003 "Salute to Greatness"
Award Honorees Announced
We are pleased to announce that this year’s Salute to
Greatness Award Honorees are Mr. Henry (Hank) Aaron & Mrs. Billye Aaron
and The Ford Motor Company and Mr. Henry Ford, II (posthumously). Each
have exemplified excellence in leadership and have demonstrated a
commitment to social responsibility in the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther
King, Jr.
The
Aaron’s are being honored for their commitment to overcoming the
adversity of racism in the world of sport & life to achieve their dreams, and their dedication to helping
underprivileged youth accomplish their goals through their Chasing The
Dream Foundation. They are also being saluted for their leadership of
many charitable causes in the community and our nation that continue to
benefit countless individuals.
The
Ford Motor Company and Mr. Henry Ford, II have had a long-standing
relationship supporting The King Center’s building and development
programs. Under the leadership of Mr. Henry Ford, II (now deceased), a
coalition of business, government, foundations, labor and educational
leaders contributed $8.2 million to the construction of the King
Center’s Freedom Hall Complex in 1978. In addition, Ford Motor
Company is being saluted for their commitment to charity, and the
priorities they place on education, public policy, social programs, civic affairs and
community development.
The
King Center's Salute to Greatness Awards Dinner will be held on Saturday, January 18,
2003 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Atlanta, Georgia.

2003 Martin Luther King, Jr.
Service Summit

It’s that time of year again when we join hands with Hands On
Atlanta for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service Summit.
Events will take place on Saturday, Sunday and Monday, January 18-20,
2003. This year’s Service Summit again is co-sponsored by Hands
on Atlanta and is a conference exploring the ways in which ordinary
citizens can make a difference in the world.
On
Saturday January 18th at 12:00 pm the keynote conversation will be with
Mrs. Coretta Scott King. Mrs. King will be interviewed by Dr. Johnnetta B. Cole, President of Bennett College; President emerita of
Spelman College and Professor emerita of Emory University.
On Sunday January 19th from 12:00 pm-4:00 pm a Freedom Tour Bus will
tour Atlanta civil rights movement landmarks and is narrated by recorded
personal stories by Atlanta civil rights movement leaders. The tours
will run on the hour and will leave from the King Historic District.
There is a $10.00 fee for the bus tour ($5.00 for children 12 and
under).
The three-day
conference concludes on Monday, January 20th with diverse community
service projects throughout Atlanta in honor of Dr. King.
