"A King Celebration" with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra

The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra's "A King Celebration," held in the King International Chapel at Morehouse College, was taped for broadcast nationwide on The King Holiday by National Public Radio (NPR). NPR is a consortium partner with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, The King Center, Morehouse College, and Spelman College in bringing this program to Atlanta.

Saturday, Sunday and Monday,

 January 19-21, 2002

 

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Service Summit, co-sponsored with Hands On Atlanta, is a conference exploring the ways in which ordinary citizens can make a difference in the world. The three-day conference concludes on Monday, January 21st with diverse community service projects throughout Atlanta in honor of Dr. King.  The conference brings home The King Holiday theme:

SunTrust volunteers polish the woodwork at historic Ebenezer Baptist Church

 

Volunteers participate in a story-telling workshop at the Old Fourth Ward oral history project.

 

Mamie Hughley, one of the Reynoldstown Quilters, shared her craft and her personal history with volunteers.

 

The Freddie Hendricks Youth Ensemble inspired an audience of 2,000 on Monday with their dramatic presentation of the civil rights struggle in apartheid South Africa in their performance of Soweto.

 

Deloitte & Touche/Deloitte Consulting volunteers and community volunteers help to renovate the historic Slaton Elementary School into a new neighborhood charter school.

Mrs. Coretta Scott King signed selected books in The King Center's Freedom Hall Auditorium for nearly 900 visitors who braved the rain for the event.

 


 

2002 "Salute to Greatness" Awards Dinner

The "Salute to Greatness" Awards is one of the King Center's highest honors and is presented to individuals and progressive corporations that exemplify excellence in leadership and have demonstrated a commitment to social responsibility in the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  The "Salute to Greatness" Award was established and awarded for the first time in 1983 and is presented during the annual "Salute to Greatness" Awards Dinner.  It is the King Center's primary fundraising initiative.  The 2002 "Salute to Greatness" awards were presented to Fannie Mae Corporation and Tony Bennett.

Annual Commemorative Service

The Commemorative Service is the spiritual hallmark of the King Holiday Observance, and features tributes to the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. from national and international leaders.  The Commemorative Service was held in Historic Ebenezer Baptist Church and was broadcast locally on FOX-5.
